The last day of operation at the AARP Tax-Aide site at the Bryan Library will be Saturday, April 12, and at the College Station Library, it will be Monday April 14. However, at this time our calendars are full. All of our appointments are booked for the rest of the tax preparation season. We are not able to schedule any additional appointments to prepare tax returns. You have until April 15 to file your 2024 return or to request an extension.
You might consider trying the free tax preparation services offered by the IRS at www.irs.gov/freefile. With IRS Free File, eligible taxpayers can prepare and file their federal tax returns using free tax software from trusted IRS Free File partners. Each IRS Free File provider sets its own eligibility rules based on age, income and state residency. Those with an AGI over the limit can still file their return for free using Free File Fillable Forms. If you don’t have a computer, the IRS Free File products allow you to use your smartphone or tablet to do your taxes.
If you need more time to file your taxes, you can submit a “Request for Extension” before April 15. This gives you until October 15 to file without penalties. However, the extension is only for filing your return. You must still estimate and pay any tax you owe by the April filing date. You will find the form and instructions here or at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf.
